New beginnings

As the summer comes to a close there may still be more glorious sunny days ahead but it is a time where we start to think about what will lie ahead in the coming year.  I have noticed just in the last week that it is getting darker earlier here in Victoria and the sun is just a wee bit lazier in the mornings.  The breeze coming in through the open windows has a coolness that wasn’t there a month ago.  There is no doubt that Fall is around the corner.  I have even noticed some leaves starting to abandon their branches and rustle in the streets.  Where did the summer go?

There is something about the freshness of the air in the Fall that is invigorating.  I love pulling out the sweaters, jeans and, dare I say, boots, as it gets too cool for flip flops.  My feet haven’t felt socks for months and will quite enjoy the coziness they will feel.

I’ve noticed a change in the sun on my morning runs these last few days.  It doesn’t have the same intensity as it did in the height of the summer.  It glistens off the water from a different angle and helps me notice new comings and goings.  Even the seagulls don’t wake quite as early.

But as I notice the end of the summer, I also notice how I am looking forward to trying new earthy, robust recipes.  All summer I cooked light, easy meals and had many a picnic.  Now I find myself perusing Pinterest for the perfect new recipe to try for a Fall dinner party.  Earthy breads with hearty grains, thick, aromatic stews and sweet, hot curries start to interest me more these days.

I’m starting to think about pulling out the throws for the couch and perhaps, thinking about changing some cushions.  It’s not quite time yet as I don’t want to rush summer out of consciousness but as the clothing gets thicker and the light switches become more active, I know I will get that itchiness to warm up my home as well.  The ideas are just starting to percolate.  And, we all know that a well percolated cup of coffee is the best.  I do think that translates to ideas as well.

Happy Fall everyone!

P.S. Stay tuned for new Fall ideas.  September has us exploring kitchen renovations here on Vancouver Island.  We’ll show you some great images as well as discuss some of the trends and materials used in today’s kitchens.
