October - Giving Thanks

October is here and it brings up the topic of gratitude, giving thanks for all we have.  Abundance is ours.  We forget this from day to day and I’d like to take this opportunity to remind us all of all we have to be grateful for.

I feel we can get caught up in the “wanting”.  It can consume us as we clamour for the newest car or the latest phone.  Certainly being part of the design world I find I am constantly faced with the “latest” and “best”.  The trends in design can leave us wanting to implement all these ideas in our own homes, to have MORE.

As designers we are constantly faced with beautiful products and these trends can leave us wanting to implement these changes in our own homes. Image: Brooke Hatfield Design

I want to just slow down a bit here and notice what we do have.  I don’t want to be that person who is never happy because they are too busy wanting the latest light or the new fancy tile just in at my favourite tile store.  I feel that design is like 3D art. But we can enjoy all it has to offer without getting caught up in it.

I want to come from a place of being aware.  To be aware of the latest trends because I enjoy the visual appeal it has and  I want to be able to enjoy my space but not because it has the latest and greatest but because it has evolved to be a part of me.  I want people to walk in my space and know it is me and I want to come home at the end of the  day and feel comfortable.

I am Brooke, the owner and principal of Brooke Hatfield Design in Victoria, BC, Canada.

Everything does not have to be perfect.  Design, to me, isn’t about perfection.  It is about taking a beautiful image and taking what works for you.  There is so much that isn’t perfect in my home BUT it is a work in progress.  I  love where it has been and where it is going.  It has been a safe and beautiful place for family and friends to live and love together and for that I am eternally grateful.

Happy October friends!!

Brooke
